Ep 89 – Hoar Frost, Eco Egg Update, Concerns, & Firewood

We awakened one morning to find ourselves in a surreal world in a forest full of hoar frost. It was incredible.
Ali has some concerns about acquiring the knowledge to maintain the ranch if Mike were unable to for whatever reason.
Update on the eco egg & wool dryer balls

Ep 88 – Ali’s Staycation Solid Lotion Tutorial

Mike had to go to Denver for a few days to do Denver things, and left Ali home alone to do those things that Ali won’t do while Mike is around
#solidlotion #tutorial #DIY #archedcabin #homestead

Recipe:
Makes 9 solid lotions if you’re using 2 oz tins.
Just under 1 cup of beeswax. Leave about 1/4″ from the top. Use less if you’d like it a little softer
1 cup coconut oil
1 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons of evening primrose oil or any other supplemental oil you’d like (optional)
2 tablespoons vitamin e oil (optional)
2 tablespoons fragrance oil. I used Nag Champa in this batch.**** If using essential oils, I would use a capful at the most. They are potent!****

Melt your beeswax & coconut oil in a jar or pyrex measuring glass in a bath of hot water, and add in your olive oil to heat and blend. Once all the oils are melted, remove from heat and add the optional oils and fragrance oil. Blend well with a popsicle stick, and pour into your 2 oz tins. Allow to cool.

Ep 86 If a tree falls in the woods, does anyone hear it?

I got my revenge on the log that smashed my toe. More weather delays, and preparing for winter on the homestead.
One of the standing dead down by our gate blew over. The tree was easily 70′ long. Had to get it out of the way so we could go about our day.
Have a teenager who is a bit nervous about learning to drive? I got mine going on the ATV to take some of the fear out of operating a car or truck. #archedcabin #firewood #chainsaw #husqvarna

E76 – Ali is learning to weld

The build is fast approaching, and I’m going to need to know how to weld for a small portion of it. I’m just experimenting at this point and trying to sort out how it all works!

Beginning the Build

It is rumored that we are going to begin the foundation this week. Realistically, I suspect it will happen maybe next week. Either way, we are on the precipice of some major changes, and of course my anxiety is skyrocketing. Interestingly though, I am aware of it, and also aware of something I heard at that class I attended recently. “What if your anxiety is excitement?”

I don’t have the best track record with follow through in the face of anxiety. I have a tendency to get in my own way and self sabotage what I’ve got happening, and I no longer wish to do that. So it’s something I’ve been working really hard on especially over the past year and a half or so. So with the exciting news, I’m mentally kind of freaking out, but instead of letting it overwhelm me, I’ve taken the day to do some light reading. Ponder the immediate needs, and not try to manage ALL of the things in this exact moment. I had a moment of realization over the past couple of days that it’s not all or nothing all of the time. Everything is about balance, and if I worked for an hour this morning, it doesn’t mean that I can’t take part of the day to sort out my thoughts or take time for myself if that is my immediate need. So when I’m feeling less anxious, then I’ll make that phone call to see what the wait time is for the inspection. When I’m less likely to feel stressed, I’ll look up what I need to know to calculate the concrete required or to ponder how we’ll connect the sonotubes to the footer molds with the different sized holes. Now is the time to gain some clarity and to approach the upcoming surge of activity with a clear head and some focus.

We are excited to launch ourselves into this next journey of our lives, and I’m grateful and pleased that we have so many wonderful souls with us on this journey.

Ep 73 – Tamales!

Ali made tamales!
I combined parts of 3 different recipes to get what I wanted.
I used this one to do the pork and sauce – https://leitesculinaria.com/106882/recipes-red-chile-pork-tamales.html
I used this video from Cowboy Kent Rollins for the masa and some pro tips – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sR5eXtIbEDY&t=504s
and for instant pot portion of the cooking I used this recipe – https://cookingwithcurls.com/2018/04/23/instant-pot-red-chile-tamales/
They turned out awesome!

Ep 72 – Adding Plants to the Memorial Garden. Happy Birthday, Mom.

More work on the inexpensive memorial garden. It would have been my mom’s 75th birthday this year. We lost her19 years ago, and have still always celebrated her birthday. This year, I wanted to be sure to get the plants into the ground because she loved her summer flowers.
